Gill’s fifth Test century of the year powered India to a commanding total of 518 for 5 declared, before the bowlers reduced West Indies to 140 for 4 at stumps.
This century marked a historic achievement for Gill, who now holds the record for the most Test hundreds in a calendar year by a player in their first year as captain.
Gill also equalled Virat Kohli’s Indian record of five Test centuries in a year as captain, a feat Kohli achieved in both 2017 and 2018.
Gill reached five Test hundreds as captain in just 12 innings, with only Alastair Cook and Sunil Gavaskar getting there faster. Cook achieved it in nine innings while Gavaskar did it in ten. In terms of matches, Gill has reached the milestone in seven Tests, matching the legendary Don Bradman. Only Cook with five matches and Gavaskar with six reached the mark quicker.
Gill’s average as captain now stands at 84.81, the second highest in Test history among players who have led their teams in at least seven matches. Only Bradman, with a staggering average of 101.51, stands ahead.
